Mathematics - The Trinity Partnership Way

1. Maths will be taught daily

2. Each classroom will have:

  • -Maths Working Wall (KS1 and KS2), which will contain:
  • ‘This week we are learning…’
  • helpful resources for current topic where appropriate
  • working examples of methods etc. being taught, as the topic progresses
  • space for examples of ‘fluency, problem-solving and reasoning’.
  • ‘Help-Yourself’ maths resources (whether in a trolley, on easy-to-reach shelves, child-level cupboards or in Maths Trugs on tables).
  • Reasoning language displayed (this could be on the working wall, around the board or on mats that children can have on their desks)

3. Teachers will follow the Trinity Partnership Mathematics Curriculum to ensure that the three aims of the curriculum (fluency, problem-solving and reasoning) are woven into the everyday teaching of mathematics. Children will have daily opportunities to apply at least one of the three aims.

4. The calculation policy will be followed and children will not move onto formal methods until they are ready to do so. Representations will be used to enable children to develop a concrete understanding of calculation strategies. This will enable them to be fluent mathematicians who do not rely on rote learning and recall of methods.

5. Maths books will:

  • Have the short date underlined using a ruler at the beginning of each new piece of work
  • Contain an indication of the intended learning (not necessarily through children copying out a title or L.O.)
  • Have one digit/symbol per square
  • Show that rulers are used for straight lines, including those under formal calculations
